CCTV FOOTAGE has captured the moment two buildings in Rio de Janeiro collapsed, bringing a third building under construction with them, and killing at least seven people and leaving 20 missing, accoording to latest reports.

The video shows pedestrians fleeing a shower of masonry and debris before the camera is consumed by a thick cloud of dust. A crowd then gathers to look at what has become, in moments, a scene of devastation. Six people have so far been pulled from the rubble alive.

The buildings, the tallest of which was 20 storeys high, collapsed on Wednesday night. The city's mayor, Eduardo Paes, has said a structural failure in the tallest was most likely to blame. However, witnesses reports of a strong smell of gas and loud bang just before the buildings tumbled suggest it may have been the result of a gas explosion.

Rio's rattling infrastructure is becoming a source of increasing concern as the city prepares to host the 2014 football World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games.
