South African who waved his hands 'aimlessly' behind US president at Mandela memorial inspires a skit

THMSANQA JANTJIE, the world’s most infamous sign language interpreter, has achieved the ultimate accolade: he’s been spoofed by Saturday Night Live.

Jantjie attracted global attention when he "waved his hands aimlessly" behind President Obama at the Nelson Mandela memorial in Johannesburg last week. The discovery that he was a "bogus" interpreter has been followed by accusations that he has faced charges for murder, rape and kidnapping, the Daily Mail reports.

SNL, the long-running US comedy show, made no reference to those accusations in a skit aired on the weekend. Featuring an Obama lookalike and an actor portraying Jantjie, it lampooned the interpreter’s exaggerated hand gestures.

The Mandela memorial provided further material for SNL. The programme also screened a skit inspired by the "selfie" taken by Obama, David Cameron and Danish prime minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt. ·
