Naomi Wolf arrested at Occupy Wall Street protest
Beauty Myth author taken away in handcuffs from ceremony to honour New York Governor Cuomo
THE FEMINIST author Naomi Wolf has been arrested at an OccupyWallStreet protest in New York. Wolf, who was a guest at an awards function hosted by Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington, was reportedly taken into custody on Tuesday night after ignoring police warnings to stay off the street where anti-corporate greed protesters were rallying.
The author of the 1990 bestseller The Beauty Myth and a male companion were led away in handcuffs outside Manhattan's Skylight Studios. Inside the SoHo venue, Governor Andrew Cuomo was being presented with 'the game changer of the year award' from the Huffington Post, for which Wolf is a regular contributor. Others attending the ceremony included the reality TV star Kim Kardashian who was given a 'business leader' award.
Around 50 OccupyWallStreet protesters were picketing the event to demonstrate their support for a "millionaire's tax", which Governor Cuomo, a Democrat, is against. A dispute with police, who said the protesters were blocking the pavement, then ensued.
The protesters were told they could not be outside the event without a street activities permit. According to The Guardian, Wolf went up to the protesters and told them that they "didn't need a permit for a megaphone".
One witness told the newspaper that Wolf also objected to a police officer's assertion that the group were blocking the street. "Tell it to the judge," the officer is reported to have said.
Wolf was later released after being issued with a summons, police said. It is unclear what charges the author and political campaigner might face. Most people detained during the month-long protests have been arrested on misdemeanours. ·
