Joker leads the way with 11 nominations but lack of diversity draws criticism

Bafta has revealed the nominees for its 2020 film awards and immediately sparked a diversity controversy.

Gloomy superhero flick Joker leads the way in nominations with 11, followed closely by Martin Scorsese’s mob epic The Irishman and Quentin Tarantino’s controversial Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood, both with ten nominations each.

But Bafta (the British Academy of Film and Television Arts) has been on the receiving end of a fierce backlash since revealing the nominations, which featured a striking lack of diversity among the nominees. Every potential winner in all of the acting categories is white.

The Daily Mail reports that “#BAFTAsSoWhite” is trending on Twitter, while even Bafta boss Amanda Berry admitted she was “very disappointed” at the lack of diversity, according to the BBC.

“This isn’t being disrespectful to anybody who has been nominated because it’s an incredibly strong list this year,” she said.

Some believe that Bafta’s decision to snub women of colour from acting categories was particularly unfair given that both Scarlett Johansson and Margot Robbie are up for two acting awards each.

Berry also noted that no female directors have been nominated for the seventh year in a row.

“If you look at the director category, where I hoped we would see at least one female director, that is an incredibly strong list when you have people like Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino and Sam Mendes, who have got multiple nominations in the past,” she said.
