A GP has been convicted of possession of extreme pornography, including a video that showed a man having sex with a snake.

Other clips Cyprian Okoro, 55, had saved from WhatsApp included footage of women having sex with horses and dogs and an indecent image of a two-year-old boy, the BBC reports.

The Nigerian-born doctor, who lives in Tulse Hill, London, denied seven counts of possessing extreme pornography and one count of possessing an indecent image of a child.

Following the verdict, prosecutor Nicola Devas told jurors at the Old Bailey police discovered the images in August 2013, when they seized the defendant's phone in relation to a sexual assault allegation which ultimately did not go to trial.

Okoro argued the images had been sent to him over the messaging app without his knowledge and that he had not viewed them.

Asked why someone would send him unsolicited videos of that nature, he said: "Perhaps it is possibly to see how depraved society has become or maybe as a shock factor," Metro reports.

The jury found him guilty of all but two of the charges, both relating to videos of bestiality with dogs. Judge Richard Hone ordered Okoro to be released on bail pending a sentencing hearing on 30 September.

Okoro first appeared in court over the charges in 2014 and was handed a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, at Norwich Crown Court. However, the Court of Appeal ordered a retrial of his case.

Judge Hone said was "very lucky" to be bailed given the nature of his offences in what he called a "quite unusual case".

"It would be unfair to put him immediately in prison when the first trial gave him a suspended sentence - even if it was frankly, pretty lenient," he said.

Okoro received an interim suspension by the General Medical Council (GMC) in September 2013, when police discovered the stash.
