The future of home technology: From 3D-printed pizzas to beds that stop you snoring

Imagine it's 2045 and you're stuck with an unsightly radiator ruining your otherwise stylish living room. You can't get rid of it – so instead you put an invisibility cloak over it. Problem solved.

Can't decide on curtains? In just three years' time, smart windows will be available, turning opaque at the touch of a button. Hungry? By 2045, kitchens will be equipped with 3D printers that can create pretzels and pizza.

This isn't a dream. According to electrical tools manufacturer RS Components, this is the future. The company has listed the technology coming to your home over the next few decades.

We already have smart meters and wifi-enabled kettles, and it appears that our everyday lives are only going to get more hi-tech.

"You're going to see some amazing technology coming to your home in your lifetime," the company predicts.

If the thought of all that technology is starting to wear you out, it might comfort you to know that by 2030 you'll be able to lie down in your very own smart bed. This will be designed to monitor your temperature and firm up or soften according to your sleep patterns. If you're a snorer it will even nudge you into a different position.

And it's not just beds that are changing. Your wardrobe will come equipped with scanners that will go through your clothes and clean off dirty spots automatically. And if your wardrobe needs an overhaul, the fabrics will be able to change colour and pattern using "intrinsic smart yarns".

There will even be smart toilets, which will "discreetly take biological readings" and screen for illnesses as you use the bathroom, RS Components predicts.
