Daniel Kearns and David Beckham on the mood at Kent & Curwen
The company's creative director discusses his latest collection, inspired by the brand’s heritage, with business partner Beckham
Daniel Kearns
We started the season thinking about who the characters could be that would embody the DNA of Kent & Curwen – drawing on our sporting traditions and heritage, but also our history of breaking rules at times, too, by making sports-inspired clothes that can be worn as daywear. Rebellion has always been such a big part of British culture and Kent & Curwen style has been part of that: think of Paul Weller and the Mods wearing a regatta jacket, for example.
With the collection, we want to appeal to a new generation. They have a sense of pride in the fact that these pieces are made from the same type of fabric that would have been used in a World War I officer's coat – for example, a traditional Melton. There's a huge history to our long coat in particular. We fitted it several times on David [Beckham] to make sure the length was right and the fit of the sleeves correct because we wanted to incorporate a modern approach.

I've had a lot of people come up to me and say: "Those jackets - are they original?" That's when I know we've done a great job; it's something that Daniel and the team have created. The collection is authentic, staying true to its British heritage while offering something more contemporary for a modern man.
