Dyson sets codebreaking trials for potential new engineers

Cryptic challenges will test abilities of budding staff – and they can all be watched online

Would-be software engineers at Dyson will be challenged to a cryptic codebreaking trial this weekend which could lead to a job with the firm.

They'll be tested via a series of "Smart Rooms" - a shifting environment generating new puzzles that will assess thought processes, teamwork and creativity.

The pop-up puzzle, in south London, will see the contestants either work as a team or individually to solve the challenges in each room. Winners will be given a Dyson 360 Eye robotic vacuum cleaner signed by the company's founder, James Dyson.

Dyson is looking to hire 110 software engineers in a bid to grow its workforce from 2,500 staff to 3,000 by 2021. The Smart Room tests are expected to evaluate possible candidates to fill the positions. The company selected the applicants after they were asked to uncover an access code embedded in a YouTube video released last month.

People unable to solve the video puzzle can still take part via the Twitch online streaming service. Participants in the Smart Rooms who need help can turn to the Twitch audience, who can vote for a solution in real time.

Dyson's Smart Rooms takes place on Saturday and Sunday. Applications to enter have now closed, but you can view the event on Twitch between 10am and 8pm.
