New Taylor Swift song prompts fan frenzy

With a gritty electronic sound and thinly-veiled revenge lyrics, the song shocks fans

After three years of musical silence, singer-songwriter Taylor Swift has finally released her new single to a frantic and frenzied reception.

Since the 14-year-old country singer moved to Nashville in 2003, Taylor Swift has taken the world by storm with a catchy and evolving style.

"Look What You Made Me Do", posted to YouTube on Thursday night, is a far darker expression of Swift's musical talents than her previous efforts.

The song is filled with scathing lyrics, which some believe are a swipe at other pop culture stars. It has been described as a "revenge track" and that Swift "is taking on the haters".

"I'm sorry, the old Taylor can't come to the phone right now," Swift sings. "Oh, why? 'Cause she’s dead."

The twitter reaction was fast and furious, with fans expressing delight at her return, combined with shock over her new-found "vindictive" side, as Cosmpolitan put it.

Fans took it upon themselves to decipher the lyrics and decide who they may, or may not, be aimed at.

Some were convinced at least one line in the lyrics was directed at rapper Kanye West, while others thought they could be aimed at singer Katy Perry, after their friendship reportedly turned sour

At one point Swift sings: "I don't like your little games / I don't like your tilted stage / The role you made me play / Of the fool / No, I don't like you."

And later: "The world moves on / Another day another drama, drama / But not for me, not for me / All I think about is karma."

Some fans praised Swift's release, while others were less than complimentary.
