Critics have labelled Motorola’s P30 smartphone a “shameless” copy of Apple’s iPhone X, after the new mobile emerged on its Chinese website today.

Fans spotted a number of similarities between the new smartphone and Apple’s flagship device, such as the small “notch” at the top of the bezel-free display and the vertically-mounted dual-lens camera on the rear panel.

The P30 also has rounded edges that are nearly identical to those found on the iPhone X, although the Motorola has a physical fingerprint scanner at the rear - a feature that was replaced with face-scanning tech on the Apple’s range topper.

The phone’s similarities with the iPhone X were quickly picked up by critics.

For instance, technology YouTuber Marques Brownlee called the P30 Motorola’s “most shameful rip yet” on Twitter, while tech news site CNet said the smartphone’s resemblance to the iPhone X is “uncanny”.

Technobuffalo, meanwhile, said: “If it didn’t have the Motorola stamp at the bottom and back, it’d be nearly impossible to distinguish it from the iPhone X.”

The P30 doesn’t just share its design with the iPhone X, either, as TechRadar says the optional multicolour Aurora paint “is exactly like the Huawei P20’s gradient-sporting Twilight colour in everything but name”.

While Motorola’s new flagship may draw some similarities with the iPhone X and Huawei P20, it’s significantly cheaper than its rivals.

According to The Verge, the P30 is expected to carry a price tag of $303 to $360 (£238 to £280) when it goes on sale in the US on 15 September. That makes it around a quarter of the price of Apple’s £999 iPhone X.

However, Motorola has yet to announce whether the controversial P30 will make its way to UK shores.
