Oscars 2019: the best dresses on the red carpet
Glenn Close dazzled in 40lb gold bead gown, while Spike Lee turned heads with Prince tribute
The Oscars red carpet is always guaranteed to showcase Tinseltown’s most weird and wonderful couture creations - and last night’s ceremony was no exception.
All eyes were on the best actress nominees as they arrived at the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard for the awards show - and they made a dazzling entrance.
Glenn Close’s shimmering gold gown contained four million individual beads and weighed in at 40lbs, leading the actress to joke in an interview with The Cut that the dress was “probably going to kill me”.

Lady Gaga is notorious for her outlandish wardrobe choices, but last night she opted for a classic black gown and long gloves reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn. The singer even set off the ensemble with yellow Tiffany diamond last worn by the Breakfast at Tiffany’s star.
And it wasn’t only the ladies of Tinseltown who wowed on the red carpet. Broadway star Billy Porter’s spectacular tuxedo gown put many of the female arrivals’ frocks in the shade.
Meanwhile, Spike Lee honoured musical legend Prince with an arresting purple suit and a pendant in the shape of the symbol the singer used during his “Artist Formerly Known As Prince” era.
