Royal sweep for Netflix as The Crown and The Queen’s Gambit win top gongs
Netflix series The Crown claimed the Emmys throne last night with seven major awards, including best lead actress in a drama series for Olivia Colman’s portrayal of Queen Elizabeth.
The Hollywood awards ceremony was “dominated from the far side of the Atlantic”, with most of the Crown gongs “accepted by a cast and crew holed up in a hotel in London”, said The Times.
The stars of the “lavish saga of the British royal family” weren’t the only Brits to pick up awards, said The Telegraph. An “exuberant” Kate Winslet was named best actress in a limited series for her turn as a troubled detective in HBO’s Mare of Easttown.
Other big winners at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday included The Queen’s Gambit, Ted Lasso and The Mandalorian.
However, the awards has come “under fire” after “zero actors of colour were awarded major prizes”, The Independent reported, “despite a record number of diverse nominees this year”.
Stars who had been viewed as front runners yet “lost out in their respective categories” included the late Michael K. Williams for Lovecraft Country and Billy Porter and M.J. Rodriguez for Pose, said the paper.
