Toyota Corolla 1.8 Hybrid review: what the car critics say 

A British motor industry success story, the Toyota Corolla is built at the Japanese brand’s Burnaston factory near Derby, said Auto Express. This new fifth-generation hatchback has undergone more extensive changes than might appear at first. It weighs 14% less, but delivers 14% more power (138bhp) thanks to a reviewed hybrid power train and redesigned battery. 0-62mph is 1.7 seconds faster too.

The cosmetic changes include new headlights, grilles, wheel designs and colour options, plus a new suite of driver assistance and active safety systems, said Autocar. Inside, the cockpit has been dramatically improved with a new 10.5in central screen and a highly configurable 12.3in “combimeter” plus knobs for the most-used functions. There are four trim levels: Icon, Design, GR Sport and Excel.

Toyota’s hybrid tech has come of age, creating a faster, quieter car that is more satisfying to drive, said Car Magazine. “It’s still more of a cruiser than a bruiser,” but has good ride comfort and suspension (even on the 18in wheels of the higher trims) and light steering. Although comfortable up front, the rear seats are a bit cramped. But with improved hybrid drive and Toyota’s ten-year warranty, it remains excellent value. Price: from about £24,000.
