Back pages: ‘Return of the king’ as Tiger Woods roars to Masters win

A round up of the sport headlines from UK newspapers on 15 April

Usually the Premier League title race between Liverpool and Manchester City would have top billing for the sport headlines on a Monday morning, but when Tiger Woods triumphs at The Masters there’s only ever going to be one winner…

Woods, 43, won his fifth Green Jacket on Sunday after a one-shot victory at Augusta National Golf Club.

It was his 15th major title, three behind Jack Nicklaus’s all-time record of 18, and comes 11 years since his last.

The American golf icon’s recovery from injury, back surgery and personal issues to secure the victory at the Masters is “the ultimate sporting comeback” says The Scotman’s front page. Metro’s back page headline has a similar feel with “the greatest comeback”.

The Guardian reports that it’s the “return of the king”, the Daily Star says it’s “roarsome” and both the Daily Express and Independent declare Woods as “The Master”.

Woods’s victory is not just back-page news but also makes many of the front pages. Here we look at the UK newspaper sport headlines…
