A round-up of the sport headlines from UK newspapers on 18 September

‘Chumpions’ League

“Chumps”. That’s the Daily Mirror’s verdict of Liverpool and Chelsea’s performances in the Uefa Champions League last night.

In their group E opening game defending champions Liverpool were beaten 2-0 by Napoli. Late goals from Dries Mertens (penalty) and Fernando Llorente gave the Italian side the win.

In west London Chelsea lost 1-0 against Valencia with Rodrigo scoring the winner for the Spaniards on 74 minutes.

The Blues had the chance to take a point from the group H opener but Ross Barkley missed a late penalty.

Wales coach sent home from RWC

The main story on the back pages of The Guardian, Daily Express and The Times is Wales backs coach Rob Howley being sent home from the Rugby World Cup

He has left Japan because of suspected betting infringements. The Welsh Rugby Union said the 48-year-old had “returned to Wales to assist with an investigation”.
