Today’s back pages: Solskjaer fights to save Man Utd job and England appoint Silverwood

A round-up of the sport headlines from UK newspapers on 8 October

Ole’s ‘losing it’

The Daily Mirror reports that Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is fighting to save his job and is losing the confidence of the hierarchy at Old Trafford.

Sunday’s woeful 1-0 defeat at Newcastle has left United 12th in the Premier League table, with the Red Devils suffering their worst start to a season for 30 years.

After the international break United face Liverpool and a home defeat to the league leaders could spell the end of Solskjaer’s reign, says the Mirror.

Meanwhile, former United players Paul Ince and Robin van Persie have also slammed his methods.

Despite the crisis at Old Trafford the Daily Star says that United bosses will stick with their manager and have told fans “don’t panic”.

England appoint Silverwood

The Guardian reports that Chris Silverwood was described as the “standout candidate” after being appointed the new head coach of the England cricket team.

Ashley Giles, director of cricket for the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), said of Silverwood: “I believe he is what we need to take our international teams forward.

“He is somebody we know well, but it is his intimate understanding of our structures and systems and his close relationships with Test captain Joe Root and white-ball captain Eoin Morgan that will help us develop our plans for the next few years.

“Ultimately, his highest quality is that he is a winner and that will be an important part of the job as we look to strive to become the most respected team in the world across all formats.”

After giving the seal of approval Giles said that Silverwood “can win us back the Ashes”, The Daily Telegraph reports.
