Champions League: Man City boss Pep Guardiola ‘so glad’ to be in the last 16

Manchester City began their Champions League campaign with a shock defeat at home to Lyon and for a while last night their fans thought another upset might be on the cards at the Etihad against Hoffenheim.

A penalty on 16 minutes from Andrej Kramaric gave the Germans the lead but Leroy Sane scored twice to ensure that City progress to the knockout round for a sixth successive season.

This time it is as group leaders, the Sky Blues finishing five points clear of the pack in group F after Lyon were held to a 1-1 draw away to Shakhtar.

The only one of the four English clubs to have qualified for the last 16 as group leaders, City’s reward will be a tie against one of Atletico Madrid, Schalke, Roma or Ajax in the next round.

“We started flat because Hoffenheim were so demanding about how they attacked the space and physically they were stronger,” said City boss Pep Guardiola. “Then we started to play. But the result is good. We are first… some big, big teams have gone out. Inter Milan are an exceptional team but they are in the Europa League.

“If one day you sleep a little bit and you will be in the Europa League, so that is why I am so, so glad to be in the last 16.”
