Juventus and Netflix announce 2018 documentary series

Juventus footballers could soon become reality TV stars after it was announced that Netflix has plans to launch a behind-the-scenes documentary series about the Italian club.

Starting early next year, the Serie A champions will be the subject of a four-part docuseries looking at life inside the Bianconeri.

Juventus will be the first football club to feature in a Netflix Original Docuseries. Each hour-long episode will follow the team during training and on away trips. The series will also focus on the players’ everyday lives.

Federico Palomba, co-chief revenue officer at Juventus, told the club website: “It’s a source of pride that Juventus is the first football club to be the subject of a Netflix Original Docuseries.

“Collaborations of this kind confirm our passion for innovation and being, in every sense, a sport entertainment brand. In this way, we are determined to reach Bianconeri fans across the world and millions of Netflix users, who thanks to this docuseries can get to know Juventus from every angle.”

Erik Barmack, vice president of international original series at Netflix, added: “Netflix is the home of passionate storytelling, and there are no more passionate fans than those of the Bianconeri.

“We are excited to have unique, exclusive access to one of the most important squads in the world.”

Following Juve’s lead could be Premier League side Manchester City who, according to the Daily Mail, are in advanced talks with Amazon Prime to create their own documentary series.

The Mail says that Amazon will pay more than £10million to City for access to all areas around the club. This would enable it to create a “number of programmes” about the Manchester side.

But Sky Sports, which pays the Premier League £4billion for its current TV rights deal, has reportedly revealed its “unease” at the Amazon-City reports.
