Is the Diego Maradona statue worse than Ronaldo’s?

Critics say it looks like everyone from singer Susan Boyle to sitcom matriarch Mrs Brown

What is it with statues of footballers in 2017? Earlier this year a bust of Cristiano Ronaldo was ridiculed after it was unveiled in Portugal. Yesterday a new statue of Diego Maradona in India got the same treatment.

Unveiled at a charity event in Kolkata, the 12ft bronze statue depicts the star holding the Fifa World Cup trophy.

While the pose is recognisable for Maradona’s efforts at the 1986 World Cup, the same can’t be said for the statue’s likeness to the Argentine footballer.
