F1 British GP reactions: history for Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone

Hamilton and Bottas lead Mercedes to seventh one-two in 2019

Lewis Hamilton spoke of his pride at winning the British Grand Prix for a record sixth time at Silverstone on Sunday.

The five-time Formula 1 world champion produced a masterclass in his home grand prix to take the maximum 26-point haul with victory and the fastest lap.

Hamilton’s Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas started on pole at Silverstone but finished the race in second place. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished third, his fourth podium in succession.

There was drama at Silverstone with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel ramming into the back of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. Vettel ended in 16th place after receiving a ten-second time penalty while Verstappen was fifth behind Red Bull team-mate Pierre Gasly.

Speaking after his sixth career victory at Silverstone, British driver Hamilton said: “Honestly I’m a bit out of breath. I can’t tell you how proud I am to be here in front of my home crowd.

“There’s so many British flags out there and every year I see it and you think you get used to it but it feels like the first time and I’m forever grateful to everyone out here I hope you enjoyed the day.

“I couldn't have done it without these guys, I couldn’t have done it without the team and everyone at the factory and their family who support them with all the time they spend away, they work so hard in their jobs.

“There’s nearly 2,000 people who make this possible and I’m just a chink in the chain and I’m super proud to be a part of this.”

Hamilton’s win was the 80th of his F1 career, on the 70th British Grand Prix. The British ace now leads the 2019 drivers’ championship by 39 points from Mercedes team-mate Bottas.

Mercedes secured a maximum points finish at Silverstone and the one-two was their seventh of the 2019 season.
