Game of Thrones: Nine of the best quotes from seasons one to six

Winter is certainly coming – but there are many more famous phrases from the hit fantasy show

As Game of Thrones season six sails off into the distance, fans are left with only the echoes of battle cries and bitter threats.

The show has become one of the most quotable of the 21st century, from Eddard Stark's words of wisdom to Tyrion Lannister's witty one-liners. With every episode, a new piece of dialogue becomes a fan favourite.

Each of the noble houses has its own official family motto or famous saying, which have been doing the rounds since Game of Thrones first began. House Stark's "Winter is coming" is one of the most famous – and while House Lannister's official motto is "Hear me roar", the family's more memorable saying is "A Lannister always pays his debts." Similarly, House Greyjoy's motto is "We do not sow", but they are more likely to be heard saying "What is dead may never die".

Season six has also provided new quote fodder for T-shirt slogans and internet memes, from Hodor's heart-breaking cries of "Hold the door" to Cersei Lannister's threats of violence.

Check out nine of the best quotes in the gallery above.
