Audi announces new all-hybrid A6 saloon

Revamped car gets hi-tech interior and a sporty new look

A new version of the Audi A6 featuring a hi-tech cabin and all-hybrid engine selection is set to take on mid-market models including the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class.

Audi has given the newly revealed A6 a total design overhaul, adopting several styling cues from the company’s new A8 flagship, says Auto Express. The revamped A6 also has shorter overhangs and a lower stance than the previous model, giving it a more sporty look.

Due to launch across Europe in June, the updated A6 is slightly larger than the outgoing model, offering more legroom and headroom in the cabin. Despite the car’s longer wheelbase, the boot’s 530-litre capacity “remains unchanged”, says the magazine.

Inside, the saloon’s interior gets a hi-tech upgrade, including the addition of the firm’s Virtual Cockpit system, which allows drivers to customise certain aspects of the car’s digital dashboard, says Car magazine.

There are two touchscreen panels located in the centre console, derived from the A8 and A7 saloons. These displays control the MMI Touch infotainment system and heating settings.

The engine line-up has also been given the hi-tech treatment, with all four motor options featuring some form of electrification.

Three mild-hybrid diesels will be available at the car’s launch: a 2.0-litre TDI and two 3.0-litre TDIs with different “states of tune”, says Autocar. A 3.0-litre V6 TFSI petrol motor with hybrid tech will also be offered.

The A6’s hybrid line-up “is currently unusual in the car market”, but more manufacturers are expected to follow suit to kerb emissions and improve fuel economy, the magazine adds.

Prices are expected to start at around £35,000m, according to Carbuyer. The A6 will make its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show, which runs from 8 to 18 March.
