Attack outside bars and restaurants leaves seven dead and 21 in critical condition

Seven people were killed and a further 48 injured following a terrorist attack on London Bridge on Saturday evening.

It began shortly after 10pm, when three men drove a rented van into pedestrians on the pavement on London Bridge before emerging from the vehicle, carrying knives and wearing fake suicide bomb vests, and making their way to nearby Borough Market, where they attacked bystanders at random.

Within eight minutes of the first call to emergency services, all three men had been shot dead in the street by armed security forces.

Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said an "unprecedented" 50 shots had been fired during the operation.

A dawn raid on a property in Barking in East London led to 12 arrests being made in connection to the attack, with controlled explosions heard at the scene.

Prime Minister Theresa May promised a crackdown, saying there had been "far too much tolerance of extremism" in the UK and that "enough is enough".
