Man Utd transfer news: Victor Lindelof breaks Ferdinand record
The Swedish centre back is the most expensive defender ever at Old Trafford - latest Man United transfer news and gossip
Signed, sealed and celebrated, that's Victor Lindelof, who was officially unveiled as a Manchester United player on Wednesday evening after he completed his move from Benfica.
The 22-year-old Swedish international centre-back is described by United's official website as "a versatile defender" and he will make his debut on the summer tour of the USA next month. Lindelof has signed a four-year contract with an option for a further year, and according to BBC Sport he has cost United £31m, which makes him the club's most expensive defender, overtaking the £29.1m that United paid for Rio Ferdinand in 2002.
"I'm looking forward to playing in the Premier League at Old Trafford and for Jose Mourinho," said Lindelof. "I'm keen to get started and make my contribution to the team's efforts to win more trophies." And Mourinho was similarly effusive when he said of his first summer signing: "Victor is a very talented young player, who has a great future ahead of him at United. Our season last year showed us that we need options and quality to add depth to the squad."
One person apparently heading in the other direction is winger Adnan Januzaj, with the Daily Express claiming that Roma are "interested" in signing the Old Trafford outcast. The 22-year-old Belgian has slipped down the United pecking order under Mourinho, and according to the Express the Special One "is keen to offload the winger this summer and wants around £8.8m for him". Roma are said to be leading the race for Januzaj with Celtic, Real Sociedad and Marseille among the chasing pack.
