Bus fares across England to be capped at £2 from January

More than 130 operators outside London will cap bus fares at £2 from next month, as part of a Government-funded scheme to ease the cost-of-living crisis. Currently the average single adult bus fare in England costs £2.80, but that can rise to more than £5 in rural areas. Now, bus companies such as National Express and Stagecoach have agreed to apply the cap between 1 January and 31 March. Children’s tickets will also be frozen at £1 for a single journey.

Woman, 69, breaks Antarctic Ice Marathon record

A retired head teacher from West Yorkshire has become the oldest woman to complete the Antarctic Ice Marathon. Chris Hobson, 69, took up running aged 60: she had recently retired from her job and was looking for something to fill her time. Through her local running club, she won a place in the London Marathon, and loved it so much that she kept applying for more. Last week’s race, in temperatures of -50°C, was her 117th, on her seventh continent. She completed it in eight hours, 33 minutes. Before the race, she had said: “I can’t wait to prove what extraordinary things older women can do – 69 is the new 40.”

Lamborghini supercar delivers donor organs

Italian police have used a Lamborghini supercar to deliver donor organs to patients at hospitals hundreds of miles apart. “Travelling on the motorway to deliver the most beautiful Christmas present: life,” they said in a post on social media, next to a picture of a cool-box in a purpose-built compartment in the Huracán. The car, which has a top speed of about 190mph, was donated by Lamborghini in 2017 for normal patrols, and urgent medical deliveries. The kidneys were driven from Padua to hospitals in Modena and Rome.
