Mason Greenwood: footballer arrested on suspicion of rape and assault
Man Utd confirm the striker will not train or play until further notice
Manchester United and England footballer Mason Greenwood has been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault following allegations on social media.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that “a man in his 20s” was arrested after the force was made aware of “social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence”. Greenwood remains in custody for questioning and enquiries are ongoing.
The allegations released on Instagram on Sunday morning included “video, photographs, and a voice note claimed to be a conversation between Greenwood and the woman”, Sky News reported. The posts have since been deleted.
Greenwood has not responded to the social media allegations, the BBC reported. United issued a statement to say that the forward would not return to training or play any matches until further notice. “We are aware of images and allegations circulating on social media,” the statement said. “We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established. Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind.”
Having come through the Man Utd academy, Greenwood made his debut for the Old Trafford club as a late substitute in a 3-1 win against Paris Saint-Germain in March 2019. He made his full debut two months later and signed a four-year contract in February 2021.
