The number of British adults aged 100 has jumped by 52% in a year, according to the Office for National Statistics, which said the number aged 100 and over also reached its highest ever level of 15,120 last year. The Evening Standard said this was is in part due to a sharp increase in births in the year following the First World War, compounded by improvements in healthcare and quality of life.
Daughter donates Picasso works to settle tax bill
Pablo Picasso’s daughter is to donate nine of her father’s works to settle a tax bill in France, Euro News reported. Maya Ruiz-Picasso, 86, is set to hand over six paintings, two sculptures, and a sketchbook to the national collections at the Picasso Museum in 2022. “It is with deep emotion that I come to celebrate the entry into the national collections,” Bachelot said in a statement.
‘Miracle’ as house avoids lava
A house in the Canary Islands has dramatically managed to escape lava from an erupting volcano. The residence in La Palma has been dubbed a “miracle house” after an image on social media showed it surrounded by rivers of lava from the Cumbre Vieja volcano. The volcano started erupting on Sunday. More than 200 homes have been destroyed and about 6,000 people evacuated.
