Samoan man serves five more years in jail than he had to

A man in Samoa spent nearly five extra years in prison because no one realised that his two sentences should have been served concurrently, not consecutively. Sio Agafili should have been released in 2015 but the mistake was only noticed by supreme court justice Leiataualesa Daryl Clarke last week. “I lost count of the days,” said Agafili. “I don’t remember much about when I should be out, I just know I had to serve my time.”

Man lives in Philippines airport for 110 days

A tourist has been serving a sentence of a different kind - he's lived in a Filippino airport for 110 days because of coronavirus lockdown measures. Roman Trofimov, from Estonia, was refused entry in March because visas were no longer being issued to arrivals. He says his passport was taken from him, leaving him stranded. For a while he slept on the floor in waiting areas, but after week he was given a room with a bed. He lives off food donated by airport staff.

The hotel based in a train on a bridge

More pleasant accommodation can be found in a luxury hotel in South Africa that has been created in a train permanently parked on a bridge. Kruger Shalati consists of 24 rooms in retired (and refurbished) railway carriages over the Sabie River in Kruger National Park. Stays at the hotel, which include meals and guided game drives to see the park’s wildlife, begin at £415 per night.
