Stephen Fry 'very, very happy' to be marrying Elliott Spencer

'It looks as though a certain cat is out of a certain bag,' tweets Stephen Fry after registering to marry

Stephen Fry confirmed today that he will marry his boyfriend Elliott Spencer and is "very, very happy".

The 57-year-old actor and presenter, who has openly suffered with bipolar disorder, was first spotted publicly with Spencer, 27, in November, although they are believed to have become close over the summer.

The couple registered to marry in Norfolk, where Fry grew up, just before Christmas.

Oh. It looks as though a certain cat is out of a certain bag. I’m very very happy of course but had hoped for a private wedding. Fat chance!

Spencer is reportedly a stand-up comedian and writer and appears to have been jet-setting around the world with Fry last year. He accompanied Fry to the Tony Awards last June and spent time in Florence with Fry and actress Emma Thompson in August.

A spokesman for Fry said the pair had "set the wheels in motion for a wedding sometime in the future" but no date had been set.

The news comes less than three years after Fry tried to kill himself. The actor has spoken publicly about taking a mixture of drugs and alcohol in a suicide attempt in a hotel room while filming a documentary about homophobia abroad. His producer saved him but Fry's body convulsed so much that he broke four ribs.

Friends have credited Spencer for putting a smile back on Fry's face, with one telling The Sun: "Since Stephen met Elliott it is like he has a new lust for life.

"We've got the old Stephen back. He has spoken about his problems in the past because he wants others suffering with depression and loneliness to know it can affect everyone.

"But he has found new hope in Elliott and they thrive off one another."

Fry has largely kept his love life private, notes the BBC, although he reportedly separated from his long-term partner Daniel Cohen five years ago.
