In pictures: The mysterious death of Natalie Wood

Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire and Laurence Olivier were also there. There was speculation that Wood, who had endured difficulties with drink and prescription drugs, might have committed suicide.

Natalie Wood and James Dean in the iconic 1955 film, Rebel Without a Cause. She was 16 when filming began and already known as a child actor in Miracle on 34th Street and other films. In 1956 she met Robert Wagner, eight years her senior, on an 18th birthday date and they married the following year.

Natalie Wood as Maria in the 1961 film of West Side Story, still the film to beat at the annual Oscars. Her first marriage to Wagner was already on the rocks (they divorced in 1962). Splendor in the Grass was released the same year.

She starred opposite Warren Beatty, with whom she had an affair.
