Premier League: Jose Mourinho ‘one loss from the sack’ at Man Utd

But some reports suggest he still has the backing of the Old Trafford board

The post-mortem into Manchester United’s 3-0 thrashing by Tottenham continues with the future of manager Jose Mourinho making back page headlines once again today.

According to the Daily Mail, players and staff at Old Trafford believe that if United lose away at Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday Mourinho could find himself out of a job.

United have suffered back-to-back league defeats against Brighton and Spurs. A third in a row would increase the possibility of the Portuguese boss being “shown the door”.

Former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has been linked with the United hot-seat and according to Oddschecker is favourite to replace Mourinho should the “Special One” depart.

An Old Trafford source told the Daily Mail: “They are saying Jose will be gone soon. Some think he’ll be out if they lose at Burnley. Others can’t see him lasting beyond September.

“We’ve seen this before and it just feels the same. The club will say it’s supporting Jose but we all saw what happened with Louis [van Gaal in 2016]. The players are already talking about the possibility of Zidane coming in.”

The Sun adds that there’s tension in the dressing room. Some United players were “baffled” by Mourinho’s tactics and team changes for the Spurs loss on Monday night.

However, according to The Daily Telegraph Mourinho has the “immediate backing” of United’s board and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

Despite the alarming form on the pitch, Mourinho will be given “every opportunity to arrest the team’s slump” and Woodward won’t be making any “knee-jerk reactions”.
