Boris Johnson is unlikely to have a restful Easter weekend, with his political future once again hanging in the balance.

The prime minister, as well as his wife Carrie and Chancellor Rishi Sunak, was fined this week by the Metropolitan Police for attending his own birthday gathering in Downing Street on 19 June. No. 10 aides are already steeling themselves for further fines to come, which they have concluded are almost “inevitable”.

Meanwhile, the Queen is no longer expected to attend the annual Easter Sunday service. No reason was given but she has pulled out of events in recent months due to mobility problems.

The four-day weekend is set to bring fine weather, but Britons have been warned of “motoring misery, with clogged up motorways, busy A-roads and a hefty fuel bill”, said the Daily Mail. The RAC is predicting up to 21.5 million car journeys on the first Easter weekend without Covid restrictions since 2019.
