Boris Johnson woke up in Kigali this morning to two painful electoral defeats and the resignation of one of his closest allies.

Political pundits are now speculating that Johnson could face a renewed challenge to his leadership, with the by-election results meaning that his authority in parliament is almost fatally diminished. And with the prime minister not set to return from the Commonwealth summit in the Rwandan capital of Kigali until next Friday, there is plenty of time for plotting for disgruntled MPs.
