Mercedes-Benz S-Class 2020: hybrid and electric EQS models in pipeline?

Next range-topping saloon expected to be limited to electrified form

Mercedes-Benz is on course to launch a new version of its luxurious S-Class saloon next year that is tipped to be offered in electrified form only.

Company insiders have told Autocar that the German carmaker will launch an “aerodynamically optimised” all-electric version of the S-Class under the new EQ sub-brand.

Badged EQS, the electrified S-Class will reportedly be capable of driving 310 miles on battery energy alone, measured under the new Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP), and be available to order by 2022.

Standard models, meanwhile, will feature plug-in hybrid engines that can do 62 miles on battery power alone.

The S-Class has always been Mercedes’ model of choice to debut cutting-edge driver assistance technology. Auto Express suggests the upcoming car may come with systems that “allow the vehicle to drive in urban environments with minimal driver input”.

Mercedes has been keeping details of the new S-Class under wraps, but spy photographers spotted the vehicle undergoing winter tests over the Christmas period, suggesting development for the production-ready car is well under way.

When will it come out?

Industry experts expect the standard S-Class to arrive in showrooms in 2020, with a possible world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September on the cards.

How much will it cost?

Sitting near the top of Mercedes’s product range, the new S-Class certainly won’t be cheap. The current model has a price tag of £73,740, so buyers can expect a slightly higher figure for the new version.
