The Decathlon: Tiger Woods to be honoured by President Donald Trump

Ten things from the world of sport on Friday 3 May

1. Will Tiger wear the Green Jacket to the White House?

Masters champion Tiger Woods will visit the White House in Washington on Monday where he will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by US President Donald Trump.

American golf icon Woods, 43, won his 15th major last month at Augusta National - his first major for 11 years.

The BBC reports that he will be the fourth golfer to receive America’s highest civilian honour after Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and the Charlie Sifford.

2. Edwards set for France role

The Guardian reports that Shaun Edwards has turned down a new contract offer with Wales and is set to become part of the France “rugby revolution”. The defensive coach will leave his Wales role after the Rugby World Cup and The Times understands he will join France on a four-year deal.

3. London rivals on course for Europa League final

Arsenal and Chelsea are both in a strong position after the first legs of the Uefa Europa League semi-finals. The Gunners beat Valencia 3-1 at the Emirates to establish a healthy advantage ahead of next week’s second leg, while Chelsea drew 1-1 with Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany.

4. Roman reluctant to sell Chelsea

Sky Sports News understands that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has no interest in selling the club. Britain’s richest man Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been linked with a takeover of the Premier League giants.

5. Bassini’s takeover of Bolton is off

Bolton Wanderers have issued a statement saying that takeover talks with Laurence Bassini have ended. The struggling Championship club said: “Given the urgency of the situation, which has been expressed to Mr Bassini, we now consider his approach for the club at an end and no further discussions will be entered into on the matter with him.”

6. United will pay £13m to ‘get rid’ of Sanchez

Alexis Sanchez’s torrid time at Manchester United looks set to come to an end. The Daily Mail says that United are prepared to play half of his £26m salary to secure him a transfer away from Old Trafford this summer.

7. Morgan hits out at Hales

England cricket one-day captain Eoin Morgan has hit out at Alex Hales for showing a “complete disregard” for the team’s values, The Daily Telegraph reports. Hales has been dropped from the England World Cup squad after testing positive for recreational drugs for the second time in his career. See today’s back pages for more reaction.

8. Ruiz Jr: Joshua hasn’t fought somebody like me

Andy Ruiz Jr has fired out a warning to Anthony Joshua ahead of their world title fight in New York on 1 June. He told Sky Sports: “I’m an aggressive fighter that throws a lot of combinations. I’m not scared of getting hit. I love action fights. Yes Anthony Joshua is buffed, he has a lot of muscles, but you don’t need a lot of muscles to learn how to fight, to take punches and be strong. Joshua hasn’t ever fought somebody like me.”

9. Alonso: I don’t miss F1

Fernando Alonso has announced that he will not race in the World Endurance Championship after Le Mans in June but the Spanish driver is not leaning towards a return to Formula 1, Planet F1 reports. Alonso said: “I do not miss it very much, I’m watching all the races, but it’s more of the same. Some teams have gotten a bit worse like Haas or Renault, others have improved liked McLaren or Alfa Romeo, but Mercedes is first, Ferrari second and Red Bull third and that we have been seeing for many, many years.”

10. Big crowd will watch the Women’s FA Cup final

A record crowd is expected to watch the Women’s FA Cup final on Saturday with 52,000 tickets already sold for the clash between Manchester City and West Ham United at Wembley. The final kicks off at 5.30pm and is live on BBC One.
