Laureus 2019 sport awards: Lewis Hamilton, Simone Biles and Geraint Thomas nominated

Britain’s Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton is one of six stars nominated for the Laureus world sportsman of the year award.

Mercedes driver Hamilton, who won his fifth F1 title in 2018, has been included on the shortlist alongside tennis world No.1 Novak Djokovic, NBA icon LeBron James, marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge and football stars Luka Modric of Croatia and Kylian Mbappé of France.

Hamilton’s Mercedes have also been nominated for the Laureus world team of the year award for the third year in a row.

In the world sportswoman of the year award category gymnast Simone Biles is nominated with Winter Olympic champions Ester Ledecka and Mikaela Shiffrin, tennis grand slam winners Simona Halep and Angelique Kerber, and four-time ironman world champion Daniela Ryf.

Cyclist Geraint Thomas is another British sports star nominated. The 2018 Tour de France winner is on the shortlist for the world breakthrough of the year award.

As well as sportsman, sportswoman, team and breakthrough there are also awards for sportsperson of the year with a disability, comeback of the year and action sportsperson of the year.

The 2019 Laureus World Sports Awards will be held on 18 February in Monaco.
