Galaxy S20: first reviews

Matt Swider, TechRadar

“The Samsung Galaxy S20 is going to be the first 5G phone for a lot of people, and it comes with a 64MP camera and 3x optical and 30x digital zoom to boot. It’s a leap ahead of the S10, but it also carries a price hike and is outclassed by two bigger phones: the Galaxy S20 Plus and S20 Ultra.

“The Galaxy S20 has a lot of things going for it: a sizable screen with a fast refresh rate, a new triple-lens camera with a lot of promise, and solid specs headlined by faster 5G speeds. But it may fall into the trap of being neither affordable nor the best of the new Galaxies.

“Its price hike will be a turn-off for some, while others with a substantial budget will look to the S20 Plus and Ultra for their fast 5G peak speeds and, in the case of the Ultra, a much better camera.”

Sophie Charara, Wired

“Looking at the underwhelming tech, price hikes and geopolitical tangles elsewhere in the smartphone world, there’s a strong chance that one of the Galaxy S20s will soon be the Android phone we recommend for most people. We’re just not hugely thrilled by them.

“There might not be any surprises but these new flagship Samsungs are likely to offer the best combination of specs, design and features you can get on Android, whether or not you’re ready to buy a 5G phone.”

Dominic Preston, Tech Advisor

“For my money, it’s the regular S20 that would, well, get my money. The S20 is by no means a cheap phone - it’s still a Samsung flagship, after all - but when the full set launches on 13 March this is clearly where you get the most bang for your buck.”
