Nike to release Marty McFly self-lacing trainers this year
Designer says team is working as hard as possible to deliver Nike MAG with Power Laces in 2015
Self-lacing trainers like the ones worn by Marty McFly in Back to the Future 2 are destined for the high street this year, according to Nike designer Tinker Hatfield.
A 2015 release date would tie in with the 1989 futuristic film, as this is the year to which Mcfly and Doc Brown time travel in their flying DeLorean.
At a trade show in California, Hatfield said his team was working as hard as possible to deliver the Nike MAG with Power Laces this year, reports Nice Kicks.
Hatfield first revealed the plans to make the trainers during an interview last year.
"Are we gonna see power laces in 2015? To that, I say yes!" he said. Nike is yet to release an official statement, but it has patented power-lace technology.
According to The Independent, the patent documents show a button on the side to activate the Power Laces, with much of the machinery to allow the shoes to tie themselves built into the bottom of the shoes, using a series of wheels and motors.
The trainers also include an "automatic cinching system" to adjust laces around the ankles.
In 2011, Nike auctioned off 1,500 limited edition MAG trainers (pictured above) – exact replicas of the high-top models worn by McFly, but without the self-tightening laces.
The limited edition shoes fetched $6m at auction with film, fashion and trainer fans all looking to own a piece of history. Proceeds from the sale went to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
After hoverboards finally went on sale last year, albeit at an expensive price, next up is flying cars...
