Joe Root praises England ODI character after hitting back from Ashes loss

Tom Curran stars with the ball as England seal 4-1 series victory against Australia

England wrapped up a 4-1 victory in the one-day international (ODI) series against Australia with a thrilling 12-run win in Perth.

Played in front of 53,781 fans at the new Optus Stadium in Perth, swing bowler Tom Curran took 5-35 as Australia were dismissed for 247 chasing England’s total of 259.

Man-of-the-match Curran told the BBC: “Watching the boys play the one-day cricket they have been playing has been a pleasure and it’s a great feeling to be in and around the side. I’ve been training hard, and to come and play the first ODI at this unbelievable stadium is fantastic.”

Joe Root, who top scored with 62, was named the man-of-the-series. He said that England showed great character in the ODIs to bounce back after the 4-0 mauling in the Ashes Test series.

“Anyone who was involved in the Test series has thoroughly enjoyed these one-day games,” said Root. “To come back has showed the character in the group and the talent. We have been together as a group for a while and we know our roles in the side. That has been really good for continuity and from that we get consistency.”

After sealing the 4-1 ODI series win, England will now focus their attentions on Twenty20 (T20) cricket. They play an Australian Prime Minister’s XI at the Manuka Oval in Canberra on 2 February before matches against Australia and New Zealand.
