Sport shorts: Patriots QB Tom Brady ‘agrees contract extension’ and MLS player calls out US Congress over gun violence

1. New deal for Pats star Brady

Six-time NFL Super Bowl winner Tom Brady has reportedly agreed a contract extension with the New England Patriots.

The two-year $70m (£57.6m) extension will see the star quarterback play on in the NFL until 2021 - when he will be 44.

Around The NFL writer Jeremy Bergman said: “The quarterback has insisted for years that he would like to play until he’s at least 45 years old. This deal keeps that goal still in the realm of possibility.”

2. Shibuno shines at Women’s British Open

Japanese golfer Hinako Shibuno secured a one-shot victory in the Women’s British Open at Woburn yesterday. The 20-year-old hit five birdies in her final round, including the last hole, to finish on 18-under. American Lizette Salas was one shot back. Shibuno, who was playing in her first major, said: “I still feel like I’m going to vomit. I was more nervous on the front nine but I was OK on the back nine. I felt like I was going to cry on the 18th but the tears didn’t come out.”

3. Kyrgios ‘still has it’

Nick Kyrgios beat Daniil Medvedev in the Citi Open final in Washington to win his second ATP Tour title of the season. The fiery Australian said: “It’s amazing. Where I was six months ago, some of the things I was doing, to respond like this having incredible support, it’s amazing. I’ve proved to myself and a lot of people that have backed me that I still have it. It’s been one of the best weeks of my life from a tennis perspective.”

4. Mick Schumacher wins in F2

Mick Schumacher has won for the first time in Formula 2. The 20-year-old, who is the son of F1 legend Michael, was victorious at the Hungarian GP yesterday. He said it was a “very special” moment in his career.

5. MLS star speaks out over gun violence

Philadelphia Union captain Alejandro Bedoya celebrated his goal against DC United by calling on the United States Congress to “end gun violence”. Following two mass shootings at the weekend the 32-year-old picked up a microphone during the 5-1 win in Major League Soccer (MLS) and said: “Congress, do something now. End gun violence, let’s go.” After the match he added: “Before I’m an athlete and a soccer player, I am a human being, first. I have got kids - I can’t be the only one feeling the same way. Something has got to be done, it has got to the point where we have become numb to it, that is a big problem.”

6. City secure first silverware

Manchester City have drawn first blood in the new football season by beating Liverpool in a penalty shoot-out in the FA Community Shield. The match ended 1-1 and City were 5-4 victors on spot kicks. Raheem Sterling had put the Sky Blues ahead on 12 minutes but Joel Matip equalised for Liverpool with a header. After Georginio Wijnaldum’s miss City striker Gabriel Jesus stepped up to score the winning spot kick.

7. Coutinho loan to Arsenal a no-go

According to reports in Spain Barcelona midfielder Philippe Coutinho has turned down a loan move to Arsenal. The Brazilian has no intention of leaving the Camp Nou and his priority is to stay and fight for his place at Barcelona. Head coach Unai Emery also revealed the 27-year-old was not on Arsenal’s radar. Emery said: “He is a splendid player, but we have not talked at any time about Coutinho.”

8. Countdown to deadline day

It’s matchweek one in the English Premier League but before any ball is kicked the 20 teams will be looking to improve their squads ahead of the close of the transfer window on Thursday.

9. Lewis extends F1 title lead

Lewis Hamilton secured his 81st victory in Formula 1 after beating Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to the chequered flag at the Hungarian Grand Prix yesterday. The Briton now leads the 2019 F1 drivers’ standings with 250 points from 12 grands prix - 62 more than his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas. Verstappen is third in the standings with 181 points while the Ferrari duo Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc have 156 and 132 respectively.

10. Second century for Aussie star Smith

Steve Smith scored another century to put Australia in control of the first Ashes Test match against England at Edgbaston.

Playing his first Test since returning from a ban after the ball-tampering scandal, Smith followed up his first innings ton with 142 in Australia’s second innings.

With the tourists declaring on 487-7, this means England either have to reach a target of 398 to win or bat out today’s final day to secure a draw.
