Election 2015: how Twitter and Facebook reacted to #GE2015

The best reaction to last night's eventful election

It may seem like a distant memory but yesterday at 9.55 pm the future of the country looked like this:

Ed Miliband was still smiling... well kind of:

And David Cameron still refused to roll down his sleeves.

Then the polls closed and everything changed. The voice of David Dimbleby in his BBC electoral swansong brought this exit poll:

Which meant people reacted a bit like this:

And some a little like this:

One Lib Dem grandee even went so far as to stake his headwear on the result:

Which rather predictably produced this Twitter account:

As the night progressed, the truth behind Dimbleby’s words became apparent and our electoral map took on a whole new complexion:

However the BBC's coverage wasn't completely covered in glory:

With everything up in the air - thankfully there was someone to tell us who the real losers were:

And, as 4am came and went, Miliband tried to remain dignified:

The end was nigh as Labour’s Portillo moment was treated with due respect:

And eventually thoughts turned back to how the shock results occurred:
