CHARLES RAMSEY, the Cleveland, Ohio resident who helped to rescue three women from his neighbour Ariel Castro's home after a decade of captivity, has told of the moment he realised he had found Amanda Berry.

In this clip from an interview with ABC News, Ramsey explains how he was walking home in Seymour Avenue, eating a McDonald's burger, when he heard a woman screaming from his neighbour's house. When he kicked in the front door to help the woman escape he assumed it was a domestic incident

The woman emerged with a small child and told her she was Amanda Berry. He did not at first remember that an Amanda Berry had famously disappeared in April 2003 on the eve of her 17th birthday and that this was her.

"When she told me it didn't register until I got the call to 911," says Ramsey. "And then, I'm calling to 911 for Amanda Berry? I thought this girl was dead, you know what I mean? And she got on the phone and she said 'yeah, this is me' and the detective Cook, Gregory Cook says 'Charles, you know who you rescued?'"
